Aloha TEDx Fans on Hawaii Island!

As we gear up for 2013 events, we’re on the lookout for folks interested in getting involved in local TEDx events on HawaiÊ»i Island. We’d love your involvement.

More than watching TED Talks, organizing or sponsoring a local TEDx event helps raise our community awareness of issues important to our way of life. By contributing your time or money you’re moving ideas worth spreading off the computer and into the hearts and minds of attendees.

“Presence” is often necessary and always illuminating for everyone involved in TEDx events. We take smalls steps towards our goals and raise our combined consciousness. It’s powerful education and really easy to get started.

We’re not asking for your time right now. Just a note from you indicating your interest in supporting TEDxHilo. When the time comes for our first meeting, we’ll send you another note to see if you’re still interested in being involved in TEDx.

The online form takes about 30 seconds to complete. Try it out!

Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus Volcano, Hawaiʻi (Map & Directions)

Thursday April 5th, 2012  –  4-8pm – Registration Open

What is TEDxChange?

TEDxChange 2012 is a TEDx event co-organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and TED. Convened by Melinda French Gates and hosted by Chris Anderson, TEDxChange will focus on issues regarding global health and development. TEDxChange type events are TEDx events hosted around the live webcast of TEDxChange, and also feature local speakers.

The TEDxChange team works with TEDx organizers around the world to help facilitate meaningful discussions on topics such as vaccines, polio, malaria, HIV/AIDS, maternal and newborn child health, and agricultural development.

Announcing TEDxChange in Volcano, HawaiÊ»i – April 5th, 4-8pm

The Volcano Art Center will host this year’s TEDxChange event via global simulcast in Volcano, Hawaii from Berlin, Germany. Melinda French Gates will share “The Big Picture” theme of TEDxChange and will set the stage as Hawaiʻi Island residents gather to watch TEDxChange.

A special introduction to TEDx will be shared and discussions about TEDxVolcano will be open to those interested in sustainability and related local issues. Come support local planning efforts for TEDxVolcano.

Potential partners, presenters, volunteers and anyone wants to learn more or already loves TED, should attend.

Moderated discussion sessions between presentations will shift “The Big Picture” dialog of TEDxChange towards the planning and organization of a local TEDxVolcano event to help better understand our local community challenges, opportunities and ideas worth spreading!

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxChange, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxChange event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

TEDxHilo Attendee SnapshotIMPORTANT!
The February 29th TEDxHiloLIVE Event will concluded in an organizational and informational meeting for future TEDx Events. Physical attendance is not required. We’re paying for additional bandwidth to have online, interactive meeting services in place so you can participate using your own internet connection.
There’s plenty interest in holding more TEDx events. I renewed the license for next TEDxHilo event, tentatively scheduled it for April 1st, 2013. Nothing is set in stone. Everything is open to organizer input. We are also expanding into more locations as several attendees have requested TEDx events around the island. We can all help support and have a role in these emerging events.
Special mahalos to the super-accommodating, Caroline from Hawaii Energy for hooking everyone up with LED lights, reusable bags and those awesome “Phantom-Power-Monitoring” surge protectors -how cool! Special mahalos to Cody Anderson at Bolo Graphics in the mall for the TEDxHilo sign and sticker printing. Special mahalos to Nina Tanabe at the Hawaii Innovation Center at Hilo for facilitating TEDxHilo. Special thanks to Laura Kinoshita for ingenious marketing and organizational support.
Special mahalos to Bill Collins for jumping in and offering to take on stage host responsibilities. Also big mahalos to Zion and Molly for taking on the videography and much more. Special mahalos to Justin Avery for delivering some much needed additional video support and more. Also special thanks for a few folks you may not have met, Mati, Doughty Leigh and Rob Williams, who made so many things possible by running me into town around after losing a driveshaft on my truck just days before the event. These are the folks that setup/took down the rooms, loaned their space, equipment, vehicles, in-kind donations, their time and energy and more things that I could ever remember right now.
Mahalo a nui loa kakou
We were all rewarded with an awesome day and I’m sure they would each agree that it was a most rewarding and valuable event for Hawaii Island. I’m certain that I speak for everyone when I say, “we hope you will consider getting involved in future TEDxHilo events.”
Special aloha a lokahi to the other attendees and event organizers who held TEDx events on the same day and everyday of the year.
Thank you again from the bottom of our collective hearts for working so hard to make TEDxHilo exemplary for everyone involved. We absolutely loved your contribution and share your manao.
